Someone in a meeting asked, “Quick question, can we just add one small feature?”
I looked up. Then I looked up some more. Then I put a wing to my beak, which is how everyone knows the next ten minutes are going to cost somebody a quarter’s budget.
“Small” is a word I’ve learned to treat with suspicion. Every small feature has a dependency, and every dependency has a cousin, and the cousin has an integration nobody documented in 2014.
So I sit on my branch, glasses perched, and I think. I think about load, about scale, about who’s going to be paged at 3 a.m. when this all falls out of the tree.
Am I overthinking it? Possibly. But I’ve seen what happens when nobody does.
